The days of manually clocking on to work are over.
Technology-driven time-and-attendance systems ensure not only accurate recording of start and finish times for all employees, but when linked to workforce-planning software they become powerful tools to help manage groups of workers achieve specific operational targets. Linked to a kiosk/self-service system it is even possible to enable employees to book their own holidays. Requests can be emailed to line managers who confirm leave if appropriate.
Many systems operate using ID cards issued to employees. These carry a bar code linking into an employee's personnel records. The cards can record the whereabouts of individuals and may even be used to restrict access to certain parts of the company.
Some may fear this verges on "Big Brother" monitoring, but it is an effective way of managing the health-and-safety implications of an untrained member of staff straying unsupervised into a potentially dangerous area.
