With so many internet resources dedicated to jobs and careers, companies would be foolish not to exploit the cutting-edge recruitment technology available.
Employers that advertise vacancies online can receive CVs by email, scan these for critical skills and produce a relevant short list without an HR officer beign required to read a single name and address. CV scanning (applied to emails or paper applications) has become sophisticated enough for programmes to identify critical factors through phrase and sentence analysis rather than the hit-and-miss process of matching key words.
Assessment companies have offered computer-based assessment tools since the rise of the CD-Rom in the early 1990s. Today online assessment exercises offer direct access to appraisal structures tailored to suit company requirements.
An organisation can require applicants to complete an online exercise before submitting their CV - and software is available that will carry out this pre-screening process. When such assessments are accessible to a wide pool of applicants, attention must be paid to online security to ensure that candidates do not share "correct" answers.
