Should you be using an application server provider?
Software Source, 25 Jun 2002
Pros
• No need for IT skills within organisation.
• Fixed and predictable cost of service to organisation.
• Rapid or immediate implementation and minimal disruption. ASP access can be delivered to every desktop without the need for an installation disk.
• Extensive technical support provided by supplier.
• System updates are immediately implemented.
• Cutting-edge HR technology can be used without disturbing other areas of business operation.
• Training programme usually provided by supplier rather than sourced in house.
Cons
• You never own the system, so the technology is not your asset.
• Customisation may be limited.
• Level of service may be determined by overall market demand rather than your organisation.
• There may be compatibility issues between technology already on your system and the ASP. It may be difficult to share information between your system and the ASP.
• Processes may need altering to fully exploit ASP value.
• Service provided may not be scaleable, requiring new investment if organisation expands.
